BlackBerry is notoriously bad at producing touch screen devices – the clickable screen on the Storm 2 and Storm were simply not to our taste. But before you completely dismiss Research In Motion’s BlackBerry’s latest device, the Torch 9800, you should wait and see for yourself, you could very surprised.
Above all, the just-announced BlackBerry Torch is smaller in real life than you might think. Remember, in relation to a unit of the same size as a BlackBerry Curve (8500 series). It is small, it is thin and it is very, very pocketable. This makes it all the more remarkable that this is a slider phone.
The torch is equipped with a 3.2-inch touch screen with a full QWERTY keyboard that slides behind the screen. RIM calls it “the best of both worlds.” Oh, and did I mention that RIM has all this in a smart phone that weighs less than 161g towed?
As for the phone itself, the BlackBerry Torch is very similar to BlackBerry 9700th It has a 624MHz Marvel CPU, quad-band GSM/EDGE Tri-band world phone coverage as well as UMTS/HSDPA 3G-band coverage, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 5-megapixel, autofocus camera with flash, GPS/BlackBerry Maps and Geo-tagging, a 4 GB memory card, and much, much more.
But the big thing here (besides the new hardware) is the new software. The torch is the first thing many of RIM devices will run on your BlackBerry 6 operating system.
In BlackBerry ese, adds the new OS: context-sensitive pop-up menus for more relevant ways, a new WebKit browser for faster and more stable performance, integrated social feeds, including the ability to multiple social networks from a single screen update , Engaging multimedia experience and the universal search results in all of your Smartphone to uncover – from contacts, apps, data, and the Web.
One of the new features is niftiest RIM’s Universal Search. While similar to other search mechanisms Smartphones, BlackBerry allows 6 you have to ask your BlackBerry, look in every nook/cranny/program and the Internet, what you are looking for. And for any of these searches, simply type your query stat directly on the home screen.
This is definitely one of the first items that we thoroughly test if it allows us to get our hands on a test device. A point to note: Research in Motion has always prided itself with the efficiency of their mobile phones. RIM is constantly proud of his designs (it is an expert in antenna placement), and in providing the best possible user experience.
That has always meant more voice and data to the customer with as little delay as possible. RIM does this by “pushing” the data to its devices using its own proprietary system. For this reason simply is RIM 2G phones have always quickly – was sometimes even faster than many 3G phones from the competition.
Battery efficiency is another area that has always shone in the RIM. The 1300 mAh battery in the torch is designed to provide up to 5.5 hours of talk time (GSM), 5.8 hours of talk time (UMTS) and up to 18 days of standby per charge time.
The other fact to remember is that BlackBerrys are popular with companies for a reason. They can be locked down and secured better than any other smartphone on the market. That is, important/private data is kept secure on a BlackBerry device.
This has always been a key selling point for BlackBerry has been, and continues to be new for the Torch. We must say we are very excited about the Torch BlackBerry excited and so you should be. So far only announced that Vodafone will sell the BlackBerry Torch, even though not push down no date or price plans have revealed.
